I have been give the answer to the average of 4 numbers, which is 96. I have been given 3 of the 4 numbers, they are 12,
18, and 24. I have to find the answer to the fourth number! Is there an equation to give me the fourth number or is there another way to solve this problem

Do you know how to find the average of four numbers? Please respond, telling us what you know about averaging numbers; once we know that, we'll have a better idea of how to proceed.

so

First, add the 3 numbers to get 54.
Let x be the number you don't know.
We know the average of 3 numbers + an unknown number x is 96
\(\displaystyle \frac{54+x}{4} = 96\)

multiply both sides by 4

\(\displaystyle 54+x = 384\)
substrac 54 from both sides

\(\displaystyle x = 330\)

the missing number is 330.
