Can you tell us where you are stuck? Maybe show us what you tried?

This is my working out. I am trying to help my nephew with it and I can't quite remember all the rules. It has been 14 years since I have done this sort of stuff. Thanks!

What is another way to write the kth root of y?

So how might you express the left hand side of the equation in a different way?

You've got [imath]y^\frac{3}{k}=y^\frac{1}{2}[/imath]. Might that imply that [imath]\frac{3}{k}=\frac{1}{2}[/imath]? Convince yourself of that, and see what you can do next.
