my result looked absolutely nothing like what was displayed as the correct one.
That does not mean it's wrong. (Maybe their result is simplified differently than yours.)
When you get a chance, would you mind getting me started on the first few steps of the d/dx so I can try it
I do not know what you need to "get you started" because you already started.
Instead, you need to post the first few steps of what you have already tried.
Also, when you study examples about the differentiation rules (eg: Product Rule, Power Rule, Chain Rule), is there anything specific that confuses you?
Please answer this question.
My impression is that (1) you've forgotten important topics from algebra and precalculus, and (2) you have not worked through enough (simpler) exercises about using the rules in blue above for those concepts to sink in.
It's very difficult for a person to focus on the calculus ideas, when they do not understand the algebra. You may need face-to-face tutoring, if you desire to study calculus and complete self-review of prerequisite material at the same time. (Please consider looking for a tutor; ask your school for help finding somebody qualified.)
We're willing to continue helping you here, too, but you have to start showing your work -- step-by-step.
What are the first few steps that you tried?
Cheers
