How can you tell if it is a horizontal or vertical asymptotes?

What you have posted means the following:

. . . . .2x - (4/x<sup>2</sup>) - 4

Was this what you meant?

What do you mean by the expression "being" an asymptote? Did you perhaps mean to ask how to tell if the expression (and relatede function) "has" an asymptote...?

To find those you need to find out the definition of asymptote.
