I have a homework question which concerns linear equations:

Find the equation of a line that goes through the point (5,-1) and is perpendicular to the graph of y = 1/3x + 1. Write the equation in slope-intercept form.

Please help me. Thank you!
 
If the line is perpendicular, you know the slope is the reciprocal negative, so your slope would be m = -3. Then you have y = -3x + b.

If you plug in your point, you can solve for b.
