The combined cost of one advance ticket to a show and one same-day ticket was $55 . It is known that 40 tickets were sold in advance and 35 the same day, for total receipts of $2100 . What was the price of each kind of ticket?

Advance ticket$

Same-day ticket $

I was think if I substract $55-$40 tickets will come up with $15
then substract $55-$35 tickest and came up with $20

but I got lost and can not figure it to come up to $2100. Am I thinking the wrong approach on this?

You have two equations
The combined cost of one advance ticket and one same-day ticket was $55
or
1*A+1*S=55
And
40 tickets were sold in advance and 35 the same day, for total receipts of $2100
or
40*A+35*S=2100
Solve the two similtanious equations for Advance and Same day prices.

I am sorry Gene here it is Thanks.

x + y = 55

40x + 35y = 2100

40x + 35 (55 - x) = 2100

40x + 1925 - 35x = 2100

40x + 1925 - 1925 - 35x = 2100 - 1925

40x - 35x = 175

5x = 175

5x / 5 = 175 / 5

(same day tickets) x = 35

to find y 35 + y = 55

35 - 35 +y = 55 - 35

(advance tickets) y = 20

sameday ticket $ 35.00

Advance ticket $ 20.00

The answers are perfect.
One very minor criticism. I implied which variable was associated with which ticket by the variable letter. You used x and y which is fine, but it is good practice to say at the top that y is same day and x is advanced. Especially since you reversed them at the end.
