NEED HELP-brackets&parenthesis

because

I'm 40 and a mechanic trying to help a family member and I cant help her solve its all online tests. If you don't want to help what's the point of a math help forum. I didn't know there were criteria that needed to be met and conditions on people giving help. Its one of 20 and I just need an example.I was trying to help her use F.O.I.L. but I need a -x to cancel out x variable..the brackets need to be an equal sign?
 
64 isn't correct

Yes 64 you got by 12•4.. that is not 42..so that doesn't help at all..Iknow order of operations and FOIL.
I do not understand how by adding just parentheses and brackets the sum can be 42
(3x2) 1[4+3]
