I'm having trouble finding the linear equation for this problem.

1. Handy Andy sells one-quart cartons of milk for $0.57 each, and half-gallon cartons (2 quarts) for $0.95 each. Assume that the number of cents you pay for a carton of milk varies linearly with the number of quarts the carton holds.

My points would be (1, 0.57) and (0.5, 0.95), right?

Start with a linear function: Price = a*Quarts + b

Substitute what you know:

0.57 = a*1 + b
0.95 = a*2 + b

Solve for a and b.

I think you have incorrect coordinates for the second point.

If your ordered pairs are of the form (number of quarts, price), your points should be

(1, 0.57) and (2, 0.95)

Read the problem carefully. Do you see that it TELLS you that a half-gallon is 2 quarts? I suspect that you used .5 because of the "half" in half-gallon....

Now, you can apply the excellent method supplied by tkhunny....
