175 students in school.
Groups to be sorted by their sporting groups
there were 10 times as many students in sharks then those in stingrays. There were 40 more marlins then sharks and the total number of dolphins was one third of the marlins.
How many students in each sporting group

Hello, and welcome to FMH! :)

I would let \(S\) be the number of students in sharks. Then

\(R\) = the number of students in stingrays where \(R=\dfrac{S}{10}\).

\(M\) = the number of students in marlins where \(M=S+40\)

\(D\) = the number of students in dolphins where \(D=\frac{1}{3}(S+40)\)

Assuming all 175 students is in one of the above groups, we must have:

[MATH]S+R+M+D=175[/MATH]
Can you proceed?

I am unsure how to display the answer showing the final figures etc.
I know that
sharks = 50
stingrays = 5
marlins = 90
dolphins = 30
I am unsure how to display this in an answer showing formula, the figures and the totals....
Thank you so much for your help so far.

all sorted, thank you. I was able to transpose and solve the formula for x
