Need help with this math question for my 4th grader!!
Courtney and Wai spent $15.60 at the mall. Courtney spent $3.20 more than Wai. How much did each spend?
For a fourth-grader, I think the best approach is the "guess and check" method.
Can you tell which of the two people spent the smallest amount of money? It looks like Wai did, because Courtney spent $3.20 more than Wai.
We know that they spent $15.60 TOGETHER. So each one of them must have spent less than $15.60. Take a guess at how much Wai spent....let's guess that Wai spent $5.00. And we know that Courtney spent $3.20 more than Wai, so Courtney must have spent $5.00 + $3.20, or $8.20.
Now we'll check. Together they are supposed to have spent $15.60. How much do WE get? If Wai spent $5.00 and Courtney spent $8.20, together they have spent $5.00 + 48.20, or $13.20. Hmmm...that is not enough! They are supposed to have spent $15.60. So, we need to make a better guess.
Apparently, Wai must have spent more than $5.00. Let's guess that Wai spent $6.00. And Courtney spent $3.20 more, so Courtney must have spent $6.00 + $3.20, or $9.20. Now you check....will they have spent $15.60 together? If not, you may need to try a "better" guess.
