Hello
i am new to this forum and this is my first post
i am studying 1st year engineering in diploma just need help with some basic revision with powers

Code:
16[SUP]x[/SUP] so i put x=1/2
so it should be like this
Code:
16[SUP]1/2 [/SUP]which mean its square root of 16 which is 4

i figured this out but i am little bit confused at this problem

Code:
16[SUP]1/4 [/SUP]
thnx for help in advance

It's asking for the fourth root of 16.

What to the 4th power gives you 16?.

Here is a small 'trick' that can help find the values of fractional exponents.

For example, say you're given \(\displaystyle \displaystyle 16^{\frac{3}{4}}\). What is this equal to?.

It is handy to write it in terms of radical notation. \(\displaystyle \displaystyle \sqrt[4]{16^{3}}\).

The numerator of the exponent is the power inside the radical and the denominator is the root index.

But, the power inside can be moved outside like so.

\(\displaystyle \displaystyle \sqrt[4]{16^{3}}=\left(\sqrt[4]{16}\right)^{3}\).

Now, it is easy to see what the inside is. It is the answer to your problem.

Now, simply take it to the third power and you have it.

Another example:

\(\displaystyle \displaystyle 32^{4/5}=\sqrt[5]{32^{4}}=\left(\sqrt[5]{32}\right)^{4}=2^{4}=16\)

Hint:

4 = 22

16 = 42
