Can someone point me in the right direction with how to setup this equation? X = ?

The sum of two numbers is 89. Adding four times the first number to the second number gives 155. Write the equation that expresses this problem algebraically.

waiting for help...

A good first step would be to pick variables for the two numbers. Which variables have you picked? Which stands for the smaller number?

If the sum of the two numbers is 89, then what equation can you form with the two variables? Solve this equation for "(larger number) = (something in terms of the smaller number)".

Then translate the statement into an equation:

. . . . .4(smaller number) + (larger number) = 155

You can then solve for the smaller number, and back-solve for the larger number.

Hope that helps! :D
