I need help learning how to solve questions so I will have an idea of how they are done.



17. A rectangle as length 32 inches and its perimeter is 6 times its width. What is its width, in inches?



answer options: (A) 96, (B) 32, (C) 8, (D) 16, (E) 24

Because this is a multiple-choice (MC) question, you could simply test out each option to see which one is correct.

That's not the best way though and wouldn't help if it wasn't an MC question.

Here's what I'd do:
  1. Draw a diagram. Label the length 32 inches and the width w inches. Let the perimeter=P.
  2. Write "the perimeter is 6 times the width" using P and w, ie convert the words to an equation.
  3. What is the formula for P in terms of 32 and w (ie the formula for perimeter of a rectangle)?
  4. You'll now have P = …….. and P = ...…...
  5. Equate them and solve for w.
