Design a function that has the following traits:

Exactly one vertical asymptote
decreasing at every x-value on its domain
passes through (-1,-1) and (4,1)

Must provide proof of domain and vertical asymptote test
 
I don’t know what exactly is expected of you, but I don’t see any reason why you couldn’t have 2 expressions for your function, one for x<0 and the other for x>0. You have probably come across these kind of “peacewise” functions if you studied continuity.

While this is true there is no need to have more than 1 expression. The problem's statement does not include the requirement for the vertical asymptote to be at [imath]x=0[/imath]. Nor, BTW, does it require for the function to be odd.
