hey everyone who has read this i'm so lost on these problems.

the directions say to translate each word problem into an equation and then solve. the numbers for the unknows are given to you.

heres one of the problems.

the gym is 21 years newer than the auditorium. it is also 1/4 as old as the auditorum. how old is each building? your choices are 26,27,28

What have you tried? (At the very least, given multiple-choice options, you could test each option to find which one works, right?)

You've picked a variable for the age of the auditorium, written expressions for "twenty-one years younger" and "one-fourth the age", and... then what?

Eliz.

You "don't get" what? You need to show us what you've done. I've listed the first couple of steps. Show what you did for them, and how you tried to proceed after that.

Eliz.

let the gym age be equal to a variable ...call it "x"

auditorium age = 'y"

auditorium age = gym age + 21

(1/4) auditorium age = gym age

rewrie these 2 equations using the variables and then solve.

If the gym is newer, so its age is lower, why are you adding to the auditorium's age to get the gym's age? What does "(1/4)(21)" mean? ("One-fourth of the difference in their ages", maybe? But why?)

Eliz.

gym's age = auditorium's age less 21 years

gym's age = auditorium's age divided by 4

Now, if you can't follow that, quit ROCKing and start studying....

Solution...

So from this we get:
Gym: 7 years old
Auditorium: 28 years
