The width of a rectangle is less than then length. If the perimeter of the rectangle is 30 yards, find the width.

i really do not know where to start so I'll do my best. I hope some one can help me. Thank you.

30 = 2L + 2W

30 = 3w + 5

25 = 3w

8.3 = w

How did 2*W turn into 5?

There is insufficient information to provide a unique answer. Don't invent new information where none is given. Did you provide ALL of the problem statement?

2L + 2W = 30

W=1 ==> L = 14
W=2 ==> L = 13
W=5 ==> L = 10

Who said W or L are Whole Numbers?

W = 5/3 ==> L = 40/3

There width can't be TOO big.

W=10 ==> L = 5 and length is less than width, violating the problem statement.

So, what was the original question in its entirety?

The question states: The width of a rectangle is THREE less than the lenght. If the perimeter of the rectangle is 30yd, find the width.

I had mis-typed the original question :wink:

I had mis-typed the original question
w = width; then length = w+3

So where are you stuck?

This is what I have done. and where i' stuck at is finding the width.

30 = 2L + 2W

30 = 3w + 5

25 = 3w

8.3 = w

How are you getting that?

L = W+3
30 = 2L + 2W
30 = 2(W+3) + 2W

Thank you for the help.

Know I understand how to find the width. Once again thank you guys for the help.
