A 50 m by 20 m swimming pool has a 2m wide path around it (the outer border of the path is always 2 m from the nearest part of the pool). Find the area of the path in square metres?

My solution is:

Area of large rectangle = 54 x 24 = 1296 m^2

Area of pool = 50 x 20 = 1000 m^2

Area of path = 1296 - 1000 = 296 m^2

The answer is 280 + 4pi m^2

How is pi involved when their are no circles mentioned in the question???

I agree with their answer of 280 + 4pi.
The clue is in the statement "the outer border of the path is always 2 m from the nearest part of the pool". This means the corners will be rounded.
The four corner sectors will together form a circle of radius 2m. The other 4 bits are all rectangles. The answer given is correct.
