Here's the problem. I think it's most related to Algebra although I haven't a clue where to begin in solving the dang thing. I was hinted it is a five step unit transformation problem.
Lance Armstrong is in the final time trial of the Tour de France. He's trying to decide which set of gears to put on his bike before the race. He'll either use a 53X11 ratio or a 53X12 ratio gears. We know Lance pedals at 100 revolutions/minute, and that each full bike stroke(full circle) yields 417 inches traveled with the 53X11 ratio. Assuming neither set of gears will put him over his maximum allowable wattage output, what is the difference in speed, expressed in miles per hour, between the two gears?
If anyone can help with this problem asap I'd be much obliged. Thanks, tammy

Well, I really understand zilch...BUT:
are you saying he pedals at 100 rev/min in both ratio cases?
What if ratio is 53X(big number)? He could travel faster than Superman!
