There is a number such that three times the number minus 6 is equal to 45. Find the number.

Let n = the number I need to find

Set up:

3n - 6 = 45

3n = 45 + 6

3n = 51

n = 51/3

n = 17

I say the number is 17.

Now go back and check..

3n - 6 = 3*17 - 6 = 51 - 6 = 45 ...........checks

Most probably you are correct.....

i would do it very differently. First off you should know that 51 - 6 is 45, so 3n=51. Now since I you are much better with multiplication then division ( I bet that you NEVER studied (or seen) division tables but you have studied multiplication tables) you should not turn a multiplication problem into a division problem!! Regardless of what you are taught. 3*17 = 51, so n=17.
