What kind of equation is this? Having major problems understanding this question, please help....

If (2 + x)(-4x)=0, what is the sum of all the possible values of x?

problem

WEll, seems like the values could be -2 and 0, so, sum would be -2?

Have you not studied quadratic equations yet? Or "solving by factoring"?

Have you heard of the Zero Product Property?

If a*b = 0, then
a = 0 or b = 0

Apply this property to your problem:
(2 + x)(-4x) = 0

By the Zero Product Property, we know that
2 + x = 0 or -4x = 0
x = -2 or x = 0

The only POSSIBLE roots for this equation are -2 and 0. Now, find their sum.

I hope this helps you.
