Write an equation of the axis of symmetry:
y= 4x² -4

Find the coordinates of the vertex:
y= 3x²
y= 5x² -1
y= -2x² +4x -1

Re: Quadratic Functions

Write an equation of the axis of symmetry:
y= 4x² -4

For a quadratic of the form 0 = ax^2 + bx + c, the x value of the vertex is given by:

x = -b/2a

(After finding the x value, plug that value into the original equation to find the y value, if the vertex point is desired.)

In this case, a = 4, b = 0, and c = -4.

Note: the vertex is always on the axis of symmetry, so x = -b/2a is also the equation for the axis of symmetry.
