Rational Exponents?

Okay so this is really making me lose my mind.


From what I've been taught the exponent only goes to that number (in this case, letter) that it is attached to.


For example this is in my notes:



But then later in the notes there's this:



So what I'm wondering is why the second example isn't 5a'4root b^7'..



Any help, advice, explanations are all greatly appreciated!

The second one is wrong.



\(\displaystyle 5ab^{\frac{7}{4}} \ \ does \ \ equal \ \ \ 5a\sqrt[4]{b^7}.\)
