I have two basic formula where I need to remove the brackets and simplify. Can someone check my answers for me? I always seem to struggled when it comes to the add/subtract part, I get confused over which I should do.

1, 2(2x - y) - 3(x - 2y)
4x - 2y - 3x - 6y
x - 4y

2, x(2x - y) - y(x + 3y)
2x - xy - xy + 3y
2x - 2xy + 3y

I'm not sure about my solution to number 2.

Thanks

2x*x - xy - xy + 3y*(-y)
2x2 - 2xy - 3y2

As pka said, -3(x- 2y)= -3x+ 6y, not "-6y". So you should have -2y+ 6y= +4y. (even "-2y- 6y" is -8y, not -6y)

2, x(2x - y) - y(x + 3y)
2x - xy - xy + 3y
2x - 2xy + 3y
x(2x)= 2x^2, not "2x". -y(3y)= -3y^2, not "-3y^2".

I'm not sure about my solution to number 2.

Thanks

PKA, thanks, I see where I went wrong there.

The simplified formula would be 1x + 4y

Can you shed any light on question 2?

meano, it's an expression.

It's not simplified enough.

This is simplified enough:

\(\displaystyle \boxed{ \ x + 4y \ }\)

Cheers guys thanks for your help. I don't know why but seem to struggle on the easier stuff but find some harder equations/expressions a doddle!
