Please help me with the following problem:

A model airplane is constructed at a scale of 1.78, if the wing span of the model airplane is 35cm what is the wing span of the real airplane?

Are you sure that isn't "1:78"? That's a bit bigger than HO Scale.

35 model cm * 78 = 2730 cm
