Expand and simplify
(2x+5)(x - 2) + 3(x + 4)

Should the answer be 2(x'2 + 2x + 1)
Or 2(x+1)'2

Those two answers are equivalent (assuming x'2 means x2).

If I were to do this problem as stated, I would choose 2(x+1)2.

Simplicity is in the eye of the beholder -- it can mean different things according to context.

When it says to expand, I don't expect the answer to be in factored form; simplify in that context means just to combine like terms. So my answer would be 2x^2 + 4x + 2.
