Hey there, I’ve just been really struggling to understand how to simplify a derivative with parentheses. I just can not see how it is simplified.

Your help would so greatly appreciated!!

Hi Tom. I think you're asking how to obtain the expression 3x(x+2) from this expression:

(x + 2)^2 + 2(x - 1)(x + 2)

There are two ways to simplify. (1) Use distribution to complete the multiplications, combine like-terms and factor the result, or (2) note that there is at least one factor of (x+2) on each side of the red plus sign, factor it out and then use distribution and combining like-terms to simplify the remaining factor.

If you get stuck, please share your attempt.

:)
