Solve 3x + 4y = 8 for y: I get y = -1y/2 + 3

I have tried to work this problem many ways and get confused each time can someone help me please?

Solve: 3x + 4y = 8 for y

this is what I have done by trying to understand a sample problem but I don't think that I have done it right can you guide me in the right direction?

3x -3x + 2 =4y = -3x + 2

y = -3/2 + 4/2 = -1y/2 + 3

This don't even look right to me can someone please help

Your subtracting 3x from both sides is correct. Your mechanics are not. Let's try it again.

3x + 4y = 8
subtract 3x from both sides getting...

3x + 4y -3x = 8 -3x
Simplify getting...

4y = 8 - 3x

Now, what must you do so that you get 1y on the left side? Remember, that whatever you do to the left side, you must do to the entire right side. Now, go ahead, make your decision and do it. If you have further problems, be sure to ask.
