This one was on a test, but something we had never seen the likes of before:

(49 - 1/y^2)/(7 + 1/y)=1 (solve for y)

so I assume that I would reduce first making it (7-1/y^2)/1+1/y)=1

I'm not sure what to do next......

no ... your first step of "reduction" is incorrect.

start by multiplying every term in the numerator and denominator by y2 ...

(49y2 - 1)/(7y2 + y)

now factor the numerator and denominator, then reduce.
