solve for x: 1 + 3x = -2x - 9

add 2x to both sides of the equation, then subtract 1 from both sides of the equation ... the last step will be dividing both sides of the equation by the coefficient of x.

A good first step would be to get the variable-containing terms together on one side of the equation, and the constant terms together on the other side. Simplify, and then divide through for the solution.

What have you tried? Where are you stuck?

Please be specific. Thank you.

this is how i worked it out ..however i would wait for an administrator to tell you if how I did it was correct ..

1 + 3x = -2x - 9

Subtract 1 from both sides ..giving you

3x = -2x - 10

(Because -9 - 1 = -10)

Now add 2x to both sides .. so 2x + 3x = 5x

and -2x + 2x cancel out

giving you ..

5x = -10

Divide 5 by both sides giving you -2

Check

1 + 3(-2) = -2(-2) - 9

1 + (-6) = -5

-2(-2) = 4. 4 - 9 = -5

they both check out :D
