I have no clue how to solve this problem:

S = a/a - r

Solve the above equation for the variable r.

I will not ever let that go. If you have a brain, you must have SOME clue. Stop giving up and beating up on yourself. THINK!!! You CAN do it. Stop listening to the people telling you that you cannot succeed - including yourself. THINK!!! Thinking will save you.

S=a/a-r

I assume you mean S = a / (a-r). Parentheses mean things. Order of Operations is important. That's why we study these things.

S = a / (a-r)

Get 'r' in the numerator. There are various ways to do this. How do you propose we do that? Do something legal. Don't just move it without regard for what is appropriate.

Can I multiply by \(\displaystyle \,a\,-\,r\) on both sides?

Yes you can. Do this and then proceed on isolation for \(\displaystyle r\).
