Solving system of non-linear equations

If I have a N variables and a system of N non-linear equations, when can I solve for the N variables? I believe if I have N variables and N linear equations I can solve for the N variables if the equations are linearly independent. Is there a similar rule for non-linear equations?

I'm not aware of any general rule for non-linear systems, but this may be only a matter of my ignorance in this area. Sorry.
