At 11.35am, Aloysisus left town X and travelled to town Y at a constant speed of 72km/h. At 12.25pm, Royden left town X and travelled to town Y at a constant speed of 97km/h.

(a) At what time did Royden overtake Aloysius?

(b) When Royden reached town Y, Aloysius was still 120km behind him. At what time did Aloysius reach town Y?

Hint: for travel with constant velocity use:

distance traveled = (speed of travel) * (time elapsed during travel)

What are you looking for (time, distance, rate, 7+12,...)? Define a variable for this unknown. Just as one overtakes another the distances traveled are the same (since they started at the same place)

Try drawing a Distance - Time graph for each person the same set of axes.
What is the slope of each line? (gradient = speed)
Which line starts at t = 0? (11.35 am)
Can you find the D intercept of the second line using its slope?
