In a General Social Survey, responses of 1964 subjects to the question, ”On an average day, about how many hours do you personally watch television?” had a mean of 2.8. The standard error of the mean was .05. Calculate the 98% confidence interval for the mean daily time spent watching television. Interpret.

1964 samples is large enough to treat this as a normal distribution. Look at a table of the "standard normal distribution" to find "z" such that P(w0< z)= 0.98. Given a variable, x, with mean \(\displaystyle \mu\) and standard deviation \(\displaystyle \sigma\), the corresponding standard normal distribution is given by \(\displaystyle z= \frac{x- \mu}{\sigma}\) so that \(\displaystyle x= \sigma z+ \mu\).
