Hi I'm trying to figure out what's 15,071 divided by 5. I'm ok until I get to the remainder, for some reason I keep coming up with 1 but apparently that's not correct. Can someone please show me step by step how to come up with the correct answer. Thanks in advance.

I don't start out with step-by-step ...

Hi Willy:

I'd like to see both the quotient and the remainder that you got, please.

Understanding the result ...

Both your quotient and remainder are correct.

What are you looking at to make you think these values are not correct?

Unless "they" mean 3014 1/5 which is 3014.2

Willy:

Is this the case?

Are you looking at 3014 1/5 and wondering why it says 1/5 instead of 1?

When you get a remainder after dividing one number by another, then the answer is not just the quotient plus the remainder. The answer always takes this form:

\(\displaystyle \mbox{Quotient} \;+\; \frac{Remainder}{Divisor}\)

We always write the remainder over the divisor.

Your remainder is 1 and the divisor is 5.

3014 + 1/5

"Three thousand fourteen and one-fifth" is the answer.
