Stuck on something that should be easy

Following the solution guide, I see that this:

1-(x+1)
x(x+1)

Should become this but I can't figure out how:

-1
x+1
 
What did you get when you simplified the numerator?

Is it really as simple as 1-x-1 so that it is -x and therefore this:

-x
x(x+1)

and then:

-1
(x+1)

Wow, that was easy, thanks! I thought there was something fancy to it. I'm getting so frustrated with class that I mess us little things, I'm in calculus and I messed this up! My teacher just rants and rights stuff on the board, everyone nods, nothing is learned.
