testing latex formatting

LaTeX formatting does not seem to be functioning correctly at the moment.

First, I copied and pasted above the coding from your initial post. The LaTex did not render for me, either.

Next, I eliminated any hidden WYSIWYG coding, by cutting the entire block of text and pasting it back as text only. That did the trick.

vBulletin's WYSIWYG editor is problematic; text formatting changes often leave garbage, even after reversing those changes.
