The largest county inthe state of New York is 1769 square miles larger than the smallest county in the same state. The size of the largest county is 64 times the size of the smallest county plus five square miles. How large is the smallest county in the state of New York?

So subtract the overage from the difference, and then note that, if the larger county is 64 times as large, the difference (less the overage) is 63 times as large.

Use this to find the size of the smallest county. Then work backwards to find the largest.

If you get stuck, please reply showing all of your work and reasoning. Thank you.

Hello, ambyboo!

It's a matter of simple translation . . .

The largest county in the state of New York is 1769 square miles larger
. . than the smallest county in the same state.
The size of the largest county is 64 times the size of the smallest county
. . plus five square miles.
How large is the smallest county in the state of New York?

"Largest is 1769 more than Smallest": \(\displaystyle \:L\:=\:S\,+\,1769\;\) [1]

"Largest is 64 times Smallest, plus 5": \(\displaystyle \:L\:=\:64S\,+\,5\;\) [2]

Equate [1] and [2]: \(\displaystyle \L\:S\,+\,1769\;=\;64S\,+\,5\)

Go for it!

thanks for the help. I worked it last night but did not get the right answer. We went over it in class today.
