the sum of two numbers is 17 and their difference is 29. What are the two numbers?

Think a wee bit. Let x equal a number and y equal another number.

\(\displaystyle \L\\x+y=17\\x-y=29\)

Solve this easy system.

I have the equation, I just can't figure out the numbers. Could you give me at least one number and let me try from there.

Why don't you just add the two equations?
