Okay, I have no idea how to even begin solving this.....

Find the value of each ratio. Round your answer to four decimal places.

tan 40°

(That was seriously all that was provided by my textbook, no where does it even show an example of how to begin either)

I do NOT believe it.

Do you have a calculator? That might work, but you didn't tell us what section you are in.

Can you find these:

tan 60º
tan 45º
tan 30º

That much information might give you a good idea about the value you seek.

Have you a formula for tan(A+B)? What if A = 20º and B = 10º? That might lead to something.

I do in fact have a calculator..... I just discovered the tan sin and cos keys (As dumb as that sounds..... I've never had reason to look to them before so I never realized what the were for).

I just entered into the introductory section of tan ratios.

Can you find these:

tan 60º (1.7321)
tan 45º (1)
tan 30º (0.5774)

That much information might give you a good idea about the value you seek.

Thank you for that.

Not yet, but I'm sure that it will be included in the upcoming sections.

One of the cardinal rules of Home Schooling, for Parents to observe, is this: "If you can't handle the math, you need to get outside help or you have no business homeschooling." Not intended to insult anyone - just suggesting you have a very hard road in front of you if you've no on-site assistance.

Well, did those three values give you ANY idea about the value you seek?

You seem to have your calculator in "Degrees" mode. That is good. You'll need "Radians" later.

As surprising as it sounds with as much help that I keep asking for (sometimes just on things that were completely obvious and just over looked) I'm doing better now as a home schooled student than when I was in public school.

Yes, this actually was very helpful to me now that I know what key on the calculator that I need. (My answer for my question was .8391)

What will the Radians be used for?

Radians - No need to go into that right now. Eventually, you shoudl get off the circle and the ratios and these trig functions will have other important meanings.
