I already know what the answer needs to be, but i don't know how to write out the formula. The sum of two numbers is 18.
Three times the greater number exceeds four times the smaller number by 5. Find the numbers. The numbers are 11 and 7 what does the formula need to be?

Let x and y be the two numbers. Then: x + y = 18.

You are told one number is larger than the other, so let y > x. You are given also that 3*y = 4*x + 5.

Can you find the numbers now?

I know I should be able to find the numbers but I'm having a hard time figuring out how to get the numbers from this equation.
I haven't done any problems quite like this one before!!

Use the first equation to solve for either x or y, then make a substitution into the second equation. You will be left with one equation in one variable to solve for.

x + y = 18 [1]
3y = 4x + 5 [2]

[1]: y = 18 - x
Substitute in [2]:
3(18 - x) = 4x + 5
Solve for x; then for y.

If you still can't finish this, you need classroom help...
Thanks for your help I think I've got it figured out now.
