Two numbers have a difference of 5. Four times the smaller number is 5 less than 3 times the larger. What are the numbers?

This is a beginning question in elementary algebra, not a question about differential equations, which is usually a college course.

Please tell us what you are currently studying and in what grade. That way we know how to answer you in a way that is appropriate for your level of mathematical knowledge. Also you need to show us your work up to where you have got stuck or else say you need a hint to get going. It looks to me as though you are just starting your first course in elementary algebra. Is that correct?
