This is probably not true . . .
Many years ago, someone addressed a letter like this:
. . . . . \(\displaystyle \begin{array}{c}\text{WOOD} \\ \text{JOHN} \\ \text{MASS}\end{array}\)
It was correctly delivered to John Underwood, Andover, Mass.
