I was typing my reply while you were noting my error.
I did try to say a^mn = a^m + aⁿ

But a^mn = a^m + aⁿ is no true! a^mn means a*a*a*...*a, mn times which is not the same as a₁*a₂*...*a_m + a₁*a₂*...*a_n
