Hi, teachers and friends. I hope you are all doing well.
When I get are word problems like this, how should I go about setting it up. I am looking for ward to your helpful hints and cues.
i know that the perimeter of a rectangle id found using the following formula;
P=2 (l+w)
the word 'extend' here is throwing me off a little bit

Lisa had a square garden that had an area of 16 square feet. She extends the length of the garden by 2 feet and the width by 3 feet. What is the perimeter of the garden?.

Thank you so much for your devoted passion in helping others.

a square has equal side lengths, [MATH]s[/MATH], where area, [MATH]A=s^2[/MATH]
extending the sides as directed yields [MATH]L=s+2[/MATH] and [MATH]W=s+3[/MATH]
finish it

thanks a lot!!. I will get on it right now and will send results.

plugging values in:
L=s+2 and W=s+3
one question :
is one side(s) equal to 4? should i pluggin' 4 as a value for s, or, should i consider 16, the measures of all sides?
i know the total area is 16 ft so each side should be 4ft
so 4 ft + 2 more =6
the width should be the same as the length w= 4 + 3 ft added =7
am i right so far?
L=s+2 and W=s+3
l = 4 + 2 =6
w=4+ 3= 7
6+7=13
now area =13^2
a=26ft2

lees messy here
extending the sides as directed yields

L=s+2 and W=s+3

Plug in values

L=4 + 2=6

W=4 + 3=7

Sum up the length and the width = 13

So if a = s2

P=3^2

P=26ft^2

"Extends the length of"= "makes it longer".

A "square garden with area 16 square feet" has both length and width of 4 feet because \(\displaystyle 4^2= 4(4)= 16\).

"Extending the length by 2 feet" means that the length becomes 4+ 2= 6 feet.
"Extending the width by 3 feet" means that the width becomes 4+ 3= 7 feet.

So the perimeter is 6+ 7+ 6+ 7= 2(6+ 7)= 2(13)= 26 feet.

Great!!!. thank you so much.
skeeter and Mr H. And, yes these little words say lot most often. Thanks
