what is the solution to 4/5 + 1/x = 3/10?

One way to start would be to multiply through by the common denominator, thus getting rid of all of the fractions. Then solve the resulting linear equation.

Personally, I'd encourage you to "start" the problem by simply thinking about it.

'x' is in the denominator. Oh, so 'x' better not be zero (0).

4/5 > 3/10, so that should mean 1/x < 0 and x < 0.

i got x= -2 is this correct?
Plug it back into the original equation and see:

. . .4/5 + 1/[-2]

. . . . .= 4/5 - 1/2

. . . . .= 8/10 - 5/10

. . . . .= (8 - 5)/10

. . . . .= 3/10

The solutions checks.
