the mean weight of five complete computer stations is 167.2 lb.
the wights of four computer stations are 158.4 lb, 162.8 lb, 165 lb, and 178.2 lb respectively.
what is the weight of the fifth computer?

well, I have the mean = 167.2
if I add up the weights of the four stations given =664.4 lb
that is a fact.
mean = (w of station 1 +w of station 2+ w of station 3 + w of station 4 +w of station 5) / number of stations

the w stands for weight
is this set up correct before I input values?. Is this a good way to solve this quickly, using the mean formula?

It would be correct with an appropriate use of parenthesis ;)

I put grouping symbols around the numerator. not at the beginning though. you are right. if you look down below I put them when I performed the operation with numbers but not at the presentation of the formula.

there you have it!. my bad. keeps happening to me!.. 191.6!!!!

I put grouping symbols around the numerator.
not at the beginning, but then I realized I had to.

check your subtraction …
it was rather my addition
158.4 + 162.8 =321.2 +165=486.2+178.2= 664.4

THANK YOU FOR EDITING IT!!!

Thanks.

oh, 167.2 = (664.4 + x) / 5
thanks.

836 -664.4 =191.6

what did I do wrong in my operation, skeeter or is not the right method?. the difference in weight is considerable.

[imath]836-664.4 = 171.6[/imath]

like I said, check your subtraction

okay, let me retrace my steps.
158.4 lb, 162.8 lb, 165 lb, and 178.2 I have to add all these four weights.
158.4 + 162.8 + 165+ 178.2=
now,
167.2 =(664+x) / 5
= 171. 6

Sorry, carelessness is going to be my undoing.

Again you wrote that 167.2 = 171.6. You know that is wrong! Stop writing it!

Sorry
(664 + x )/5= 171.6
i dont think there is a need to perform the steps of the calculation, but if you want me to do it, I'll do it.

This just terrible! [math] 158.4 + 162.8 \neq 321.2 + 165[/math][math]321.2 + 165 \neq 486.2 + 178.2[/math]
NO, YOU'RE NOT SEEING WHAT I DID. I JUST BROKE DOWN THE ADDITION IN TWO PARTS.

I did this on my paper
158.4 + 162.8= 321.2
then
321.2+165=486.2
486.2+178.2 =664.4
that was what i did.
