It's in the course of financial math.
That symbol is used in order to calculate the present value of an annuity (present value = payment x that symbol)

It is the present value of an annuity immediate of m annual payments at i%.

Put two dots over the "a" and you have the present value of an annuity due of m annual payments at i%.

It is part of standard international actuarial notation.
