why = next to a greater than symbol ?

Hi, this was posted. you solved it because the poster never answered. but I have a question.

Why this greater than symbol next to the equal symbol?. Is this common or was that a mistake?
Or should i assume this is the the greater or equal than symbol?. Just this doubt. the solution and the steps were given.

This is a common way to represent [imath]\ge[/imath] in plain type, just as "^" represents an exponent. See here, for example:
