a jazz concert brought in $213,000 on the sale of 8,300 tickets. If the tickets sold for $20 and $30 each , how many of each type of ticket were sold?

I was thinking either 20x + 30y =213000 but having the 8300 specific amount of tickets is really throwing me off
Im honestly not sure how to begin, thanks so much!

I was thinking either 20x + 30y =213000 Either that or what ?

That equation is a good start, IF you explicitly define your symbols.

x = the number of $20 tickets sold

y = the number of $30 tickets sold

Here's another equation, to form "a system of two equations in two variables" for you:

x + y = 8300

Do you know how to use the substitution method ?

It basically changes FROM x and y TO x and 8300 - x.

In other words, if you solve the second equation for y and substitute the result for y in the first equation, you've basically done this:

x = the number of $20 tickets sold

8300 - x = the number of $30 tickets sold

AND, your 20x + 30y BECOMES 20x + 30(8300 - x).

Now you can form an equation containing only one variable (x), and solve for it in the usual way.

Please show work or ask specific questions, if you would like more help.

Simpler example:

10 tickets sold for total of $36: some at $3 and some at $5.

x = tickets at $3: so 10-x = tickets at $5 ; follow??

3x + 5(10-x) = 36 ; OK?

Thank you so much! Ill be sure to be more specific when i post my next question.. which will be in about 5 minutes!

We're all anxiously waiting...

I get: "3,600 tickets were sold at $20 each and 4,700 tickets were sold at $30 each."

yo denis no need for the sarcasm.. unless you'd like to reply to my second question with an accurate helpful response
and mmm thats what i got also!

Did you post a second question, yet ?

If your next question pertains to a separate exercise, please start a new thread. 8-)

no no Maggie......

Wake up Maggie, I think I've got something to say to you
It's late September and I really should be back at school
I know I keep you amused, but I fell I'm being used

Oh Maggie, I couldn't have tried any more
You led me away from home
Just to save you from being alone

You stole my heart and that's what really hurts
The morning sun when it's in your eyes really shows your age
But that don't worry me none, in my eyes you're everything
I laughed at all of your jokes, my love you didn't need to coax

Oh Maggie, I couldn't have tried any more
You led me away from home
Just to save you from being alone

You stole my soul and that's a pain I can do without
All I needed was a friend to lend a helping hand
But you turned into a lover and mother
What a lover, you wore me out, all you did was wreck my bed
And in the morning kick me in the head

Oh Maggie, I couldn't have tried any more
You led me away from home
'Cause you didn't want to be alone

You stole my heart, I couldn't leave you if I tried
I suppose I could collected my books and go on back to school
Or steal my daddy's cue and make a living at playing pool
Or find myself a rock and roll band, that needs a helping hand

Oh Maggie, I wished I'd never seen your face
You made a first class fool out of me
But I'm as blind as a fool can be

You stole my heart but I love you anyway
I'd never seen your face
I'll get on back home, one of these days
