Did I solve this problem correctly?

The problem goes like this:

A local referendum passed by 137 votes. If 993 votes were cast, how many voters voted against the referendum?

I did this:

(x+137)+x=993
2x+137=993
2x=(993-137)
2x=856
2x/2=856/2 = x=428

428 voters voted against the referendum.

Is that correct? Please? I'm hoping it is...*fingers crossed*

Thanks!

You did it correctly and intuitively constructed the equation.... great job!

let Y = yes, N = no

{N + Y = 993
{Y = N + 137

Solve the system of equations:

N + (N + 137) = 993
N = 428

Good work!

Wow, I did something right for a change! :D Thanks for answering. My math teacher uses alphabet letters for those type of equations too...I've just gotten too used to the x's. Thank you again!
